China Disputes Philippines' Island Claim

BEIJING China on Saturday hit back at Manila's charge that Chinese fishing boats intruded into Philippine waters last week, saying the Philippines' claims to a disputed area of the South China Sea had "no support in international law", DPA reported. Scarborough Shoal, called Huangyan Island in China, "belongs to China's Zhongsha archipelago ... (and) has never been within Philippine territory", Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhu Bangzao said. China has "sufficient historical and legal evidence" to prove the area has always been part of its territory, the official Xinhua news agency quoted Zhu as saying.
